Inspiring Art, Reflectiveness, and Acceptance of Imperfections with Kingyo Kintsugi’s Relaunch and Its Latest Collection
Online embroidered patches store, Peony & Talon’s rebranding into Kingyo Kintsugi
The upcoming Spring collection celebrates renewed life and hope, timely for the Lunar New Year
Peony & Talon started out in 2016 as an online store for Japanese-inspired embroidered patches. Full-time tattoo artist and founder, Joel Ang, had a vision of translating his work of contemporary Japanese tattooing into the creation of large embroidered patches, big enough for the graceful details of Japanese art to come through. This, unfortunately, had to take a backseat due to busy schedules at work, a move to Sydney, then Melbourne, and starting a family. 6 years later in 2021, work as a medical doctor in clinical medicine, and the human condition left Joel's partner, Rie, feeling quite broken. In helping Joel get his vision off the ground again, Rie found a new form of healing and being healed in art, and Kingyo Kintsugi was reborn, breathing new life into the embroidered patch brand.
Kingyo is Japanese for goldfish, the first-ever embroidered patch that Joel Ang designed. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold, the idea being that brokenness is not something to be hidden; but rather, as part of the history of an object, it makes the item even more beautiful and becomes something to be celebrated.
Kingyo Kintsugi’s Lunar New Year Spring Collection
Made available for online purchase worldwide through their website on 13 January 2022, Thursday, 8pm AEDT, Kingyo Kintsugi’s upcoming collection rejoices in the approaching lunar new year. The collection includes motifs of spring and new life, with sakura blossoms, peaches, and rabbits, as well as an all-new mini Tiger Cub patch alongside the brand’s standard Tiger patch from its initial launch collection, to celebrate the Year of the Tiger. Colours chosen are of lighter spring colours - sunny yellows, pastel peaches and pinks, and meadow greens. The Sakura patches include a colourway of vibrant red and gold to bring in the new year.
The spring collection celebrates hope - spring representing renewed life after the bleakness of winter. Rie explains, “This hope comes from the feeling that we might finally be moving forward after 2 years of the pandemic. The world started changing around this time in 2020. 2 years of lockdowns, isolation, and separation from loved ones later, we’re finally starting to see people reuniting with family and friends again. It’s the lunar new year once more, and for Joel, Milly, and I, we are so very hopeful that we'll see our loved ones in Singapore again…even the darkest winter ends, and spring eventually comes. Like the art of kintsugi, hope is healing - it offers the possibility that our brokenness, our scars, and our experiences, whatever they are, may yet turn out to be the strongest, most beautiful parts of our story. This upcoming collection is a reminder of the inevitability of spring, a reminder of hope, and of why we celebrate a new year so joyously.”
